Nitrogen dynamics and nitrogen‐to‐phosphorus stoichiometry in cold region agricultural streams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cold agricultural regions are getting warmer and experiencing shifts in precipitation patterns, which affect hydrological transport of nutrients through reduced snowpack higher annual proportions summer rainfall. Previous work has demonstrated that the timing phosphorus (P) concentrations is regionally coherent streams northern Great Plains, suggesting a common climatic driver. There been less investigation into patterns stream nitrogen (N), despite its importance for water quality. Using high-frequency quality data collected over 6 yr from three southern Manitoba streams, goal this research was to investigate seasonal N P resultant impacts these on N/P stoichiometry. In spring, high inorganic were associated with snowmelt runoff, while dominated by organic forms; remained consistently low summer, increased biological transformation removal. Relationships between concentration discharge showed generally weak model fits (r2 values significant relationships ranging .33 .48), strength direction differed among seasons, forms N. Dissolved strongly dissolved carbon. Nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios varied but significantly lower during storm events (p < .0001). These results suggest climate-driven temperature may negatively downstream region.

11 Whilst the processes involved in the cycling of dissolved phosphorus (P) in rivers have been 12 extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms controlling particulate P concentrations 13 during small and large flows. This deficiency is addressed through an analysis of large numbers of 14 suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under baseflow (n = 222) and storm event (n...

متن کاملIntegrating principles of nitrogen dynamics in a method to estimate leachable nitrogen under agricultural systems.
Surplus nitrogen (N) in ground and surface water is of concern in intensive agricultural regions. Surplus N leaches during lengthy periods where annual crop systems are used in temperate regions. This paper presents a model to estimate the surplus N available for leaching to ground water beneath agricultural systems and applies the model to watersheds in an intensive maize and soybean productio...
متن کاملAn assessment of nitrogen removal from headwater streams in an agricultural watershed, northeast Ohio, U.S.A
The objective of this project was to assess in-stream nitrogen removal capacity in a fragmented agricultural landscape and to compare removal capacities in streams with agricultural or residential (hereafter referred to as agricultural streams) and forested riparian land use. We also identified what stream characteristics control nitrogen removal in these systems. We examined paired reaches (on...
